Congressman Ron Barber

Representing the 2nd District of Arizona

U.S. REP. RON BARBER’S STATEMENT ON THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF JAN. 8, 2011

Jan 8, 2013
Press Release

TUCSON – U.S. Rep. Ron Barber issued the following statement on today’s anniversary of the Jan. 8, 2011 shooting in Tucson.

Two years ago today, a gunman opened fire at a Congress On Your Corner event held by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords at a Northwest Tucson shopping center.

Six people were killed, including Gabe Zimmerman, outreach director to Giffords. Thirteen others were wounded including Giffords and Barber, who was the congresswoman’s district director.

One year ago this month, Giffords resigned to focus on her recovery. In June, Barber was sworn-in to finish her term and he was sworn in last week to a full two-year term.

Today, Barber will mark the moment of the shooting in a private gathering with members of his family and staff. Also today, he will visit University of Arizona Medical Center to thank the doctors, nurses and others who treated him and other victims of the shooting. He also will attend an evening prayer service.

Barber’s statement:

We will never forget what happened on January 8th, 2011 – but I also know that our community was not then and will not now be defined by that act of violence.

Tucson is a special community that was deeply wounded two years ago. Sadly, within the past two years – and even within the past month – other communities in our nation have experienced the hurt and the pain that we in Tucson know too well.

Because of what happened here, we have a personal understanding of the grief and loss that those communities are experiencing.

In the wake of these mass shootings, we must take action to prevent another such tragedy. As a survivor, a grandfather, a mental health professional and a member of Congress, I am determined to do so.

The following event is open to the public:

WHAT: U.S. Rep. Ron Barber attends Evening Prayer Service of Reconciliation

WHEN: 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013

WHERE: St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.
